California Autism Foundation (CAF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Richmond, California. == History == The California Autism Foundation began as an idea in 1982 to create a community for tenets with autism. Inspired by the "foster son of the founder of the California Autism Foundation, Kenny, who was severely impacted by autism, had minimal speech and severe behavioral problems."〔( CAF History ), September 22, 2013〕 The first ABC Residential Home opened in San Rafael, California in August 1983. The residents were six young men who were believed to never live a normal life outside of an institution. ABC provided a quality of life for these residents within a community environment. This community was one of support and based on human rights and respect. ABC Residential Homes help provide an active and productive lifestyle for its tenets to work on inclusion, positive programming and develop their communication skills. The California Autism Foundation now owns three residential homes. Their programs include: ABC Supported Employment Program ABC Supported Living Services〔( CAF Residential Programs ), September 20, 2013〕 California Autism Foundation created ABC Apartments in order to provide adults with disabilities with a safe, affordable environment in which they could live. In 2008 John Visbal took over as CEO of California Autism Foundation and made plans for expansion.
